If someone types into MSN or Yahoo the keywords for a search such as 'accommodation in Nottinghamshire', the site needs to appear at the top of the listing to be found. This is clearly not straight forward since if you try a search you will find it returns 1000's of sites. So how is it done?

The search engines have robots or crawlers that search the sites and record specific information such as the name, title and site content. Well designed sites have other information buried in the coding that the robots also record. In addition they look at links, the pictures and the text. What they want are sites that are content rich and truthfully about what they profess to be about since they want to return relevant sites to users. This can be quite hard for a robot because its only as good as its programming, but it is consistent. However, just to make it a little more complex, the programs the robots use are changed this changes the site rankings - so optimization is a continuous process.

We also have access to key word search statistics, so that we can choose keywords or search terms that are regularly used, for example the word Nottingham is 3x more regularly searched than Nottinghamshire, so we get the most from the key words selected.
